Sweet Local Peaches and Nectarines Summer means sweet, delicious Washington stone fruit! The Washington state peach harvest has begun and hand-picked peaches are at the peak of ripeness. Wonderful served fresh, chilled and sliced, the main attraction in tarts, as part of salsas and reductions, and a delicious dessert when grilled, peaches do double duty in nutrition and flavor. Peaches are fat-free, sodium and cholesterol free and a good source of vitamins A, C and natural fiber. Equally appetizing, Washington nectarines are delicious straight from the tree as a ready-to-eat snack and amazing in homemade cakes, salads and sauces. One five-ounce nectarine is sodium free and a good source of vitamin A and C.

Juicy News: Peach-O-Rama coming to Metropolitan Market Summer’s juicy jewels hit stores soon. Peak season is August and Metropolitan Market is ready with its all-about-the-peach celebration, Peach-O-Rama! This delicious event features Wapato, Wash.-based Pence Orchards and organic growers Frog Hollow Farms from Brentwood, Calif. Peach farmers subscribe to a tree-ripe program in which they hand pick the fruit at optimum ripeness and brix level (a measure of sugar content). Metropolitan Market only considers carrying peaches with minimum 13 brix reading, with many of its Peach-O-Rama stars soaring up to a brix of 18, such as Pence’s succulent Regina’s and other peach varieties. They’ll make their way to all six Seattle and Tacoma locations through the second week of September while supplies last!
